Clitoral Hoodectomy

What is a clitoral hoodectomy?
A clitoral hoodectomy, or clitoral hood reduction, is a surgical procedure that is performed in order to remove excess skin around the clitoris which causes the clitoris to look enlarged or uneven. Because excess skin covering the clitoris can sometimes cause decreased sexual sensitivity, a clitoral hoodectomy may also result in enhanced sexual satisfaction.

Why is it performed?
Many women who have excess skin on the sides of the clitoris find that they are unable to achieve orgasm, because the clitoris is covered with too much skin tissue. Because of the excess skin, sensation is reduced, or in some cases, eliminated entirely. Women may be frustrated with the exterior appearance of their vagina and clitoris, leading to decreased self-esteem. A clitoral hoodectomy is thus done to improve the aesthetic appearance of the female vulva but may also provide women with increased self-confidence.

How does it work?
The clitoral hood reduction surgery is a quick and effective procedure. The entire procedure will take approximately an hour. It is often performed under local anaesthetic, although depending on your unique case, for some general anaesthesia may be recommended by your gynaecologist. Clitoral hood reduction is microsurgery. The procedure itself is conducted with the use of laser equipment. Dr Rampersadh will remove excess tissue from the clitoral hood with the laser, and also restore the remaining tissue. The procedure focuses only on the hood of the clitoris, and the clitoris itself is not affected in any way. Once the excess skin has been removed and stimulation to the clitoris is no longer restricted, the remaining tissue is stitched together with very thin absorbable stitches.

This short procedure enables the patient to return to her day-to-day activities quickly. The area may be tender and inflamed, but nothing that inhibits normal functioning. You will need to refrain from engaging in sexual intercourse for the next two weeks during recovery.

The sensitivity to the clitoris will be heightened due to easier access to it and thus the benefits of the procedure include better sensation during sex, enhanced self-esteem and better quality of life.
